Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Stratify seeds by placing them in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag and refrigerating for 4-6 weeks. This mimics the natural cold period seeds would experience outdoors.
Sowing:
After stratification, sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date. Use a seed-starting mix and lightly press seeds into the surface without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a consistent temperature of around 70°F (21°C).
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Transplant seedlings to the garden, spacing them 3-4 feet apart to accommodate their mature size.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year. Water deeply to encourage deep root growth. Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Pruning: Prune Annabelle Hydrangeas in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged stems and to shape the plant. Cut back stems to about 18-24 inches to promote vigorous growth and large blooms.
