Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Choose seed potatoes that are certified disease-free and have multiple eyes (sprouts). Cut larger seed potatoes into pieces, each containing at least 2-3 eyes. Allow them to dry and form a protective callus for 1-2 days before planting.
Sowing:
Plant seed potatoes in early spring, 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date. Dig trenches or individual holes 4-6 inches deep and space seed potatoes 12-15 inches apart, with rows spaced 2-3 feet apart. Place seed potatoes with the sprouts facing upwards.
Germination:
Potato plants emerge from the planted seed potatoes within 2-3 weeks under optimal conditions.
Transplanting:
Potatoes are generally not transplanted in the traditional sense. Instead, they are planted directly into the ground or containers where they will grow to maturity.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during tuber formation, but avoid waterlogging. Hilling: As the potato plants grow and reach about 6 inches tall, mound soil or mulch around the base of the plants to cover the stems. This protects the developing tubers from sunlight, which can turn them green and toxic.
