Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before planting to improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Maintain a temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C) for optimal germination.
Germination:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Seeds typically germinate within 10-14 days under ideal conditions.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost when they are about 6 inches tall and have developed several sets of leaves. Space plants 18-24 inches apart in rows that are 36 inches apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly, ensuring the soil remains moist but not saturated. Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost to support growth. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Yacon plants can grow quite tall, so staking may be necessary to support the plants. Harvest tubers after the first frost, when the foliage starts to die back. Dig carefully to avoid damaging the tubers. Store tubers in a cool, dry place.
