Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is needed for Candy Cane Sorrel seeds. However, soaking the seeds in room temperature water for a few hours before planting can speed up germination.
Sowing:
Sow the seeds directly in the garden or in seed-starting trays/pots.
If sowing directly in the garden, choose a well-prepared bed with loose, well-draining soil.
Scatter the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them in. Do not cover the seeds deeply, as they need light to germinate.
Space the seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart if sowing in trays or 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) apart if sowing directly in the garden.
Germination:
Place the trays or pots in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight. A temperature range of 65-75°F (18-24°C) is ideal.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Germination typically occurs within 1-2 weeks.
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have developed at least two sets of true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, they can be transplanted to their final growing location.
If transplanting outdoors, ensure that the danger of frost has passed.
Space the plants 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) apart to allow for their mature size.
Care and Maintenance:
Water the plants regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil evenly moist.
Mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
Monitor for common pests such as aphids and slugs, and treat as necessary with organic pest control methods.
Candy Cane Sorrel is generally hardy and low-maintenance but appreciates regular care to promote vibrant blooms.
Where flowers bloom, so does hope.
Happy gardening!
